AUR Mooloolah Supermarket

Enterprise: AUR Mooloolah Supermarket

AUR Mooloolah Supermarket wanted to take the guesswork out of staff management, whilst creating a progressive and supportive business culture.

“I read a lot about the available systems, looked into prices, which were similar, but it was Time & Access’ personal service that I really liked.  They came out to see us and gave us the answers we needed.”
Wally George, Owner/Operator, AUR Supermarket Mooloolah QLD

In early 2004, AUR Mooloolah Supermarket decided to expand to meet strong customer demand, doubling the size of their store, and growing their staff base from 17 to 40 in three months.  In preparation for their expansion, the owner/ operator Wally George, evaluated numerous ways of streamlining his staff attendance management and payroll automation.  He wanted to gain the benefits of leading edge technology, taking the guesswork out of staff management.

With 17 staff and a medium-sized store, manual timesheet calculations and payroll preparation took Wally up to four hours per week. They began to worry that their expansion to 40 staff could mean they would be spending an entire day just doing payroll.

A number of their industry peers with larger stores warned them of the staff monitoring issues they may face by growing at such a speed.  Wally wanted to circumvent these problems before they occurred.

The Solution

Wally began to evaluate time and attendance management systems that fulfilled his three main criteria:

  • Accurately collect employee attendance times, monitor breaks and leave
  • Automate payroll preparation and interface with the existing payroll system
  • Record, monitor and forecast labour costs departmentally to drive supervisor-based budget management

“I read a lot about the available systems, looked into prices which were similar, but it was Time & Access’ personal service that I really liked.  They came out to see us and gave us the answers we needed.”

AUR Mooloolah installed the ENTERPRISE software with one HandPunch Terminal which was positioned in their back office.  All staff now come to the office five minutes before their shift begins to “Clock On” and say hello, five minutes after their shift finishes to “Clock Off” and say goodbye, making the back office the “Control Room”.

“The positioning of our time collection device is one of the things that makes it so successful” said Wally.  “We get to see each staff member before they start.  We can see how people are on the day and manage or help with any potential personal problems, illnesses or issues that could be affecting them.”

AUR Mooloolah now spend less than one hour per week running their payroll for 40 staff, and expect to reduce that even further when they fully automate the payroll process using ENTERPRISE’s interface to their payroll system Quickbooks by October 2004.

“Any place that has a large number of staff would have to consider some sort of system, surely!” said Wally George.  “Undoubtedly, the initial cost will quickly recoup itself through time savings on payroll alone!”

AUR Mooloolah are using ENTERPRISE’s comprehensive departmental cost reporting to monitor wages and hours for each department against budgets. Supervisors are now able to take a proactive approach to efficiently managing their teams using this new technology.

The ENTERPRISE time in attendance management software is an easy to use system that is ideal for retailers who do not want to waste their time micro-managing staff attendance and inefficiently preparing their payroll.  “It is easy to register people in, easy to operate and it brings no privacy issues”.

“Undoubtedly, the initial cost will quickly recoup itself through time savings on payroll alone!”

Our staff and customers see us as a progressive store, embracing technology, and they reward us with their satisfaction.  We enjoy being at the forefront of our industry.Time and Access’ after sales service has been so good that I would happily recommend them to other supermarkets.”
